Engaging discussion with authors and panelists on writing, book subjects, their stories and their inspiration. The Thursday sessions have proved a big hit with the reading nation.
XARRA Books has hosted successful book launches, readings, film screenings since September last year which have featured renowned authors, poets, filmmakers – the cream of African literary and arts world: Prof Willie Kgotsisile, Simao Kikamba, Manu Herbstein, Lisa Combrinck, Veronique Tadjo, Khalo Matabane and many more…
The following books have been launched at XARRA Books and are all available at the store. 
The Thursday events start at 18h30 and take place at XARRA Books 1 Central Place on Jeppe Street, Newtown. These are open to all who are committed to the word and who want to be part of the reading nation. We call them XARRITES.
Every second Saturday we have poetry sessions with a featured poet followed by an open mike session. XARRA Books has featured Masoja Msiza, Verbal Spirit, Prophet JD and others. There will be a poetry session this week which will by filmed as part of a conference publication for Avagliano Publishing, an Italian publishing company who will publish an anthology of South African and Italian poetry with translations into both languages. Poets are welcome to attend and perform two pieces to form part of the publication.

Saturday sessions start at 15h30 on a Saturday afternoon and are usually outside in the fresh sundowning Saturday afternoon of Jozi.
Kids story telling is offered on every alternate Saturday morning from 10h30. Kids are welcome to be part of these animated storytelling sessions where the storytelling sessions where the storytellers use shakers and drums to make the stories come alive. Learn more about themselves, their culture and languages and the culture and language of others. XARRA Books believes the nurturing of a reading nation starts from childhood.
